For many local businesses, the phone is where the money is. A homeowner with a broken AC unit rarely fills in a long form; they tap a number and call. Yet many accounts I audit track no calls at all, or count every tap on a phone link as a "lead", including two-second hang-ups.
Google Ads offers several ways to track calls, and each measures something slightly different. Here are the options, how I set them up and how to avoid counting one call twice.
What are the different types of Google Ads call tracking?
Google Ads call tracking covers four main situations: calls made directly from your ad, calls made from your website after an ad click, taps on a click-to-call link, and calls recorded in an outside tool that you import later. Most service businesses need at least two of these.
| Method | What it measures | Needs a Google forwarding number? | Typical setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calls from ads | Calls placed from a call asset on the ad itself | Yes, for call length and reporting | Call asset + call conversion action |
| Calls to a number on your website | Calls from people who clicked an ad, then dialled the number on your site | Yes | Google tag + number swap snippet or GTM |
| Click-to-call clicks | Taps on a tel: link on your site |
No | GTM trigger + Google Ads conversion tag |
| Imported calls | Calls tracked by a call-tracking platform or CRM | No (the tool provides its own numbers) | Integration or offline conversion import |
One important note: Google forwarding numbers are not available in every country. Where they are not supported, you lose call length data and website call conversions, and rely on click-to-call tracking or a third-party tool. Check Google's help documentation for your country first.
How do you track calls from ads with call assets?
You track calls from ads by adding a call asset and creating a phone call conversion action for calls from ads, so a tap on the number in your ad can count as a conversion.
What is a call asset?
A call asset (previously a call extension) adds a phone number or call button to your search ads. You can add it at account, campaign or ad group level, and schedule it for business hours so you do not pay for calls nobody answers.
Why does call length matter?
Call length matters because a three-second call is usually a misdial, not a lead. When call reporting is on and Google can use a forwarding number, the call conversion action lets you set a minimum call length. Only calls that last at least that long count as conversions.
I set this per business rather than accepting the default. A cleaning enquiry usually involves describing the job, while a restaurant reservation can be a genuine short call. Check your own call logs and pick a length that separates enquiries from wrong numbers.
The setup, in general terms:
- Turn on call reporting in your account or campaign settings (Google has moved this setting more than once, so search the help centre if you cannot find it).
- Create a new conversion action for phone calls and choose calls from ads.
- Set the minimum call length, conversion value and counting option ("one" is usually right for leads).
- Add a call asset to the campaigns you want to track.
- Check after a few days that calls appear in your reports.
Google has also been phasing out call-only ads in favour of search ads with call assets, so check which formats are currently available.
How do you track calls from your website?
You track website calls by showing a Google forwarding number to visitors who arrived from an ad and counting calls to it. This website call conversion is the only native way to confirm a website call happened and how long it lasted.
Visitors who did not click an ad see your normal number. For ad visitors, a script swaps it for a Google forwarding number tied to that click; Google connects the call to your real line, records the duration and counts calls above your minimum length as conversions.
You need the Google tag on every page plus the number swap configuration. Google Tag Manager (GTM) has a built-in Google Ads calls from website conversion tag where you enter the conversion ID, label and phone number exactly as it appears on your site; a format mismatch can break the swap.
Test it before you trust it. Google documents a debug mode for website call conversions that shows whether the number swap is working, so follow the current help article rather than clicking your own ads repeatedly.
How do you track click-to-call with GTM?
Click-to-call tracking counts taps on a tel: link: someone intended to call, not that they connected. It works everywhere and is easy to set up, so I still use it, usually as a secondary conversion.
The basic GTM setup:
- Enable the built-in Click URL variable.
- Create a trigger of type "Click – Just Links" that fires when Click URL starts with
tel:. - Create a Google Ads conversion tag with your conversion ID and label, fired by that trigger.
- Optionally send a GA4 event at the same time so you can analyse calls by page and source.
If your phone buttons use JavaScript instead of a real link, push a dataLayer event instead:
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
window.dataLayer.push({
event: 'phone_click',
phone_location: 'header'
});
My guide on tracking WhatsApp clicks, calls and form submissions in GA4 covers the triggers in more detail.
Do not count the same call twice
Tracking both click-to-call and website calls can turn one call into two conversions. Make one primary (used for bidding) and the other secondary (reported only). Where forwarding numbers work, I make website calls primary because they confirm a real call of meaningful length.
How do you import calls from a call-tracking tool or CRM?
You import calls by sending outcomes from a call-tracking platform or CRM back into Google Ads as offline conversions. It is the most accurate way to see which calls became paying jobs.
Call-tracking tools assign numbers per source or visitor and record call length. Many integrate with Google Ads directly, matching calls to ad clicks using the click ID (GCLID) captured on the website. Google Ads also supports uploading call conversions using caller details and call time, though the exact options and requirements change, so check the current import documentation.
Importing lets you mark a call as a booked job and attach a value, telling Smart Bidding which calls were worth paying for. My post on offline conversion tracking from your CRM to Google Ads explains the wider process.
What about calls from Local Services Ads?
Local Services Ads (LSA) handle calls differently. They charge per lead rather than per click, and calls are tracked inside the LSA lead dashboard rather than through your normal conversion actions. Google screening and verification badges, eligibility and the way leads are credited vary by business category and country.
Keep LSA reporting separate from Search so you can compare cost per lead honestly. I compare the two in Google Ads vs Local Services Ads.
What does a solid call tracking setup look like in practice?
A solid setup measures every way a customer can call, with one primary conversion per real call:
- Call reporting turned on
- Call assets added with a business-hours schedule
- Calls from ads conversion with a sensible minimum call length
- Website call conversions with a Google forwarding number (where available)
- Click-to-call tracked in GTM, set as secondary if website calls are primary
- GA4 event for phone clicks for page-level analysis
- Call outcomes imported from your CRM or call-tracking tool, if you have one
- Test calls made and confirmed in reports
For TalkBar, a restaurant in Bengaluru, I built a GTM container with triggers for call clicks, the reservation button, WhatsApp clicks and other interactions, then created Google Ads conversion actions for calls, reservations and form submissions with enhanced conversions. The previous setup had left calls and reservations untracked; afterwards, every major action was captured and attribution in Google Ads could be verified.
Final thoughts
Call tracking is a small system, not one setting. Get the primary conversion right, filter out short calls and feed real outcomes back. If you would like me to check your setup, see my advanced conversion tracking service or book a free tracking audit.
